Douglas Woodworth is an artist photographer based in the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania. His practice engages the landscape as a site of observation, memory, and discovery, seeking out its hushed, often overlooked narratives. Grounded in an extensive background in painting and drawing, Woodworth captures quiet, liminal scenes that evoke a timelessness shaped through atmosphere and light. His work is infused with depth and presence, moving away from the idealization of the landscape to reveal its quiet unease and subtle ambiguity. Woodworth allows the mood and atmosphere of a place to guide his creative decisions, embracing the capacity of landscape to shape perception, experience, and meaning. Each photograph is carefully realized through a meticulous capture, development and printing process, ultimately conveying the distinct sensibility and unique atmosphere that define his vision of the world.
Statement
My approach to photography is one of searching, of seeking something oddly familiar; something I recognize, but can't quite identify, as though remembered from some distant past. I am drawn to places that resonate with me on a personal level, spaces that evoke a sense of suspended time, otherworldliness, sparseness, and isolation. My work develops gradually. I often find myself returning to the same locations, again and again, until the land seemingly settles into me like a memory I have always carried. This patient, methodical approach allows me to foster a deep engagement with both the environment I photograph and my own creative process.
